Inspired by Fiona over at Straight Talking Mama...

So over at STM's blog she posted some awesome pics of herself when she was in her mid 20s (and BTW I think she looks equally awesome now!) and it got me thinking about how we as women see ourselves and how I see myself as I head into my 40s. Okay so I am 42- and at this stage while I don't like some aspects of how my body and face are aging, on the whole I actually like how I look now more than I did when I was in my early 20s. Gone is (most) of the self consciousness, I like how my sense of style has developed, and I think I would wear more womanly and revealing clothes now than I ever had the confidence to back then. I guess there's gonna be a tipping point where I maybe don't like what the aging process is doing (I know the weight gain "at the drop of a hat" is not thrilling me even now and my skin ain't what it used to be!) But on the whole give me 40 over 20 any day- I like looking like a woman.

Ok with that said, Fiona, who I think is one sassy chica, inspired me to drag out a pic or two of myself from back then. The pics below were taken twenty years ago when I was about 22. A mate asked me to do a job- he needed some pics for a newspaper ad and so I helped out and scored some neat black and white pics.

So what do I notice about myself at 22? I spent a lot more time on my hair- used to set it all the time (note to 42 year old self- could spend more time on said hair do!) And I reckon there's a whole lot my 42 year old self would like to say to that 22 y.o. about life, love and the world!

So what do others think? How easy is it as a woman to like yourself at any age?

FABULOUS pics! You look stunning! Nice to know I inspired a post too.

I agree actually I would feel a hell of a lot better at this age if I wasn't the weight I was, I'm a lot more comfortable in my skin than at that age. Now if I can just conquer the weight issue!

Wow, what a looker! (Then and now.) I'm 43 and I agree that I'm more comfortable in my skin at this age than I ever was in my 20s. I generally like who I've become but I still believe myself to be a work in progress. At 63 I'll probably look back on myself at 43 with similar thoughts.

too big of a question for so early in the day. Do I love myself now? Did I love myself 20 years ago? I don't know for sure, but I know that with age comes a lack of worrying about it anymore. I am less concerned with how I look, and with what others think, and that is a HUGE RELIEF!! My only fear of aging is the physical part, as I am a girl who has counted on looks to get me places for my entire life.

All I want to do right now is lose about 25 pounds, do more yoga, spend more time with the younger ones in my family, and be happy. Oh yeah, and I am reading "Start Late, Finish Rich" - not because I am worried about material things, but because I live in the USA and am worried that if I don't sock as much money away as possible, I am going to have be a bag lady by the time I am 65.

Such a pretty lady at any age. I am same age as you and have just recently had a rethink a look that has been so me for over 20 years. Thoughts of softening the blonde hair, glossy red lipstick and my love of 50s floral frocks - images of Bette Davis in Whatever Happened To Baby Jane have been haunting me!

Beautiful now and then...but I think more so now...I find being older to be a good thing. I feel a confidence I never felt when I was a cute 20 something...don't we all! With age comes both beauty and wisdom!

I love being in my 40s and realize I am luckier than a lot of women to have aged well. I look WAY better than I did in my 20s, and the confidence is there. I think dressing vintage and living a rockin' lifestyle is a huge contributor to staying youthful, even as the crows feet dig deeper into my cheeks. Please write again, I only just discovered your blog in the last few months.
